About Us

DoingIPS brings together researchers working in the broad area of International Political Sociology (IPS). At the crossroad of different disciplines, they explore different theoretical and methodological lines of thought that are deployed in IPS and key themes of debate that are currently shaping this growing and stimulating field. More than a finite research group, DoingIPS is a hub that aims to promote International Political Sociology by adopting a flexible and inclusive approach.

Since its inception, International Political Sociology (IPS) has been defined by its distinct effort to articulate a critique of dogmatic conceptualisations of international politics. To that aim, it explores the conceptions of the ‘social’ and ‘political’ that historically have been inscribed in ‘the international’ and investigates how the ‘international’ is produced across multiple, transversal and inter-connected sites of political and social life.

It is becoming increasingly evident in the present world that humans, animals, plants, and geological and atmospheric processes are intertwined. With people constantly on the move, often crossing borders and boundaries, it is also increasingly difficult to differentiate between local and global phenomena. The conventional divisions between state and society, human and nature, and the international and the national are no longer sufficient to address the complex challenges of today's world. International Political Sociology offers alternative approaches to world politics that allow us to engage with these challenges creatively.

To that purpose, Doing IPS supports the development of interdisciplinary concepts, methods and theories that go beyond the inherited models of territorialised sovereignty, state/society relations and the international system while engaging some of the most pertinent challenges in world politics today. One of its primary goals is to embrace the resourcefulness of knowledge creation across International Relations, Political Science, Sociology and related disciplines in the social sciences and humanities.
